about

I wanted to document this gig I played on my Hand, Face, Bass Tour in late 2021. I feel it represents a perfect demonstration of what my life as a troubadour is like. It was at The Lab in Northampton, a fantastic place that is the epitome of what a small venue should represent – inclusivity, progressiveness and an atmosphere of permission for art to happen.

The night I was booked to play was called Hush, run by the excellent singer songwriter, Russ Heyworth. I hadn’t met Russ before, in fact the whole night was a night of strangers for me to play to, and the gig itself was designed to be a quiet space for audiences to enjoy something magical. I really digged that vibe.

Russ opened the show with some fine, gentle songs that made us laugh and think. At the last minute, Roz Music stepped in to cover for a second support who couldn’t make it. She and her bass player, the wonderful Kev, pulled out a stunning set of the most beautiful and heart breaking songs. Then I had to go up and do what I do.

Although the audience was small and 100% strange to me, and I to them, I’m extremely proud of the end result of this show (the applause at the end and the friendships that started there). I went on stage with no plan of a set list, or even how long to play for. It builds from a cold start, and slowly, joke by joke, laugh by laugh, thought by thought, it builds over an hour to a shared moment of something that’s hard to describe. Connection. Understanding. I don’t know.

On good weeks, I get to do this every night in different places and I hope that never stops.

Thank you to Kirsty, who booked me in at The Lab, Russ, Roz and Kev for the night of music and to those that came to the show and didn’t leave. Also, thank you to my Patreon patrons, who believe in me enough to support me in doing this.
